So yesterday was our first “Electronics-Free Sunday” which meant – NO cell phones, iPads, iPods, computers, internet or TV all day. I wanted to see how it felt for a day without all the modern luxuries/ distractions. My husband drew the line when I suggested no electricity 😆. Leading up to this, I didn’t feel like we had a problem but there were definitely moments where all of our heads were down into our devices. Do you know how many times you pick up your cell phone every day to check your email, social media, a text, etc.?
Some things I noticed during this experiment:
-It was a lot harder than I thought! I wanted to grab my phone to check the weather, the time, texts and definitely when I had a moment of boredom.
-My girls normally play outside during the weekends, so this day was no different, however the time spent inside was harder without the ability to turn on the TV as background noise or casually grab their iPod to play a game.
– The day felt sooooo much longer-which was fantastic! Who doesn’t want a longer Sunday? Before going outside we played the first half of Monopoly. My husband played on his guitar and read a book while I gardened and chatted with a neighbor. After dinner we continued Monopoly until the girls went to bed and we both read (real) books.
-And the most surprising was how much better we all seemed to sleep. I woke up feeling great and up before the alarm. Maybe because our minds didn’t have to recover from information overload?
-I actually really liked it! I think my husband is still pondering the idea before he agrees to a weekly ritual 😆
I encourage you to try it and please let me know what you think!
